Meetings don’t have to be a drag. As HR professionals, we’re uniquely positioned to transform them into engaging, energizing sessions that boost morale and productivity. A little bit of fun can go a long way in fostering a positive work culture and stronger team bonds.

Here are 5 ways HR can bring a sense of fun to any professional meeting, whether in-person or on a video call:

  1. Start with a “Show and Tell.” Kick off the meeting with a quick, non-work-related activity. Ask each team member to share a personal item and tell its story. It could be a favorite coffee mug, a picture of their pet, or a unique souvenir. This is a great way to learn more about each other and build personal connections.

  2. Host a “Would You Rather” Poll. Use a simple polling tool (or even the chat function) to ask a lighthearted “would you rather” question. Examples include “Would you rather have unlimited vacation days or an unlimited food budget?” or “Would you rather have a permanent clown nose or permanent clown shoes?” It’s a low-pressure way to get everyone to participate and can reveal fun, surprising insights.

  3. Gamify Your Agenda. Turn parts of your meeting into a game. For a brainstorming session, use a “caption contest” with a funny picture. For a discussion on a new process, try a quick role-playing scenario where team members act out different perspectives. This approach sparks creativity and makes problem-solving more dynamic.

  4. Celebrate Small Wins. Dedicate the first few minutes of every meeting to a “Kudos Corner.” Invite everyone to share a recent accomplishment, no matter how small. This positive reinforcement sets a motivating tone, encourages peer recognition, and ensures everyone starts on a high note.
